SRI KOKKU VETTIYAN KARUPPANNASAMY TEMPLE
Over 100 years ago, lord Karuppasamy in the form of stone found near cauvery river bank, Musiri area, Tamil Nadu. Not knowing the lord in the form of stone, a nearby family took the stone and started using it as a counter weight in pump foe for field cultivation, for their surprise the amount of water that should be pumped in 4 days was pumped easily within few hours. While the family scared of this surprise, one night when two of the brothers in the family were at home, during mid-night lord Karuppasamy in the form of human voice stood outside the house called elder brother to pump water in the field, to the surprise again water was pumped within few hours. The same event continued on the next day too but both these days elder brother can only see the shadow of the human; could not clearly view the human whom he follow to the field.
Now the family in fearsome state as elder brother fallen sick, thought it might me be some unravelling spirit troubling the family. The next day when Karuppasamy happened to continue his play at mid-night this time the elder brother did not opened the door instead he asked the human to put his hand beneath the door, when he did, the elder brother punched the hand with the heated steel rod which he readily prepared for this situation. Karuppasamy in the form of human couldn’t bear pain, cried, ran into the field destroyed the fields for which he helped cultivation by pumping water.
After few days, the family with help of a kodangi(fore-teller) realized it was Karuppan who made all these daily events asked god in what name should they call him. There seen a crane flying above the head, kodangi asked god to kill the crane in order to prove it is Karuppan, without any delay, the god cut the crane into two halves confirming him once again as Karupannasamy, thus the name of the god(temple) originated as Kokku Vettiyan Karuppasamy.
The temple is since maintained by the family and their generations.
